Active Clinical R&D: UK & West Africa

Next-generation optical diagnostics for the global south.

Abbe Labs is engineering AI-powered Fourier Ptychographic Microscopy (FPM) systems. We build low-cost, stain-free, wide-field diagnostic rigs to detect Malaria, identify Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), and screen for Cervical Cancer in resource-constrained environments.

The Global Diagnostics Gap

High-end optical microscopes are fragile, expensive, and require chemical staining. More critically, emerging markets face a severe shortage of trained microscopists, leading to massive diagnostic bottlenecks that cost lives.

800,000

Microscopist Shortage

Africa needs an estimated 800,000 additional medical laboratory professionals. Technicians are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of daily manual smear reads. Hardware alone cannot solve this; automated, edge-AI analysis is mandatory.

800M+

Addressable Patient Base

Combining cases of Malaria (249M) and Schistosomiasis (240M+), alongside hundreds of millions of women requiring routine Cervical Cancer cytology screening, the need for rapid, decentralized diagnostics represents a massive public health procurement market.

$1.2B+

Digital Microscopy Market

The global AI diagnostics and digital microscopy market is surging. By decentralizing access through low-cost FPM hardware, Abbe Labs opens up emerging markets that traditional MedTech giants cannot reach.

Proprietary FPM Hardware

By modifying and hardening the OpenFPM framework, we have engineered a proprietary computational rig. It bypasses expensive high-magnification lenses to deliver high-resolution, wide-field cellular data optimized for field deployment.

Targeted AI Diagnostics

Our edge-based machine learning models are trained on diverse clinical samples. We automate the analysis of blood smears (Malaria), urine filters (Urogenital Schistosomiasis), Kato-Katz smears (STH), and cytology slides (Cervical Cancer).

Built for the Field

Laboratory-grade precision engineered for real-world integration. We are actively conducting on-the-ground market validation and clinical pathway mapping across healthcare networks in Nigeria and Ghana.
